Daven,
Regarding attempts to simulate reflective properties of Compact Discs.

One way you may try to fake this lighting effect would be to make the front
and back surfaces of your CD slightly conical instead of planar. This will
cause any reflected image to appear as thin streaks across the disk surface.
This can be accomplished by changing the thickness of the CD's center points
without effecting the thickness of the points around the CD's edge. If for
instance the side view of your disk looked like this:
*------------------* *-------------------*
| | | | XYview
*------------------* *-------------------*
you would size the center points along the Y axis only to get something like
this:
______------* *------______
*------ | | ------*
| | | |
*------______ | | ______------*
------* *------
Please forgive these crude ascii illustrations.
The slope from center to edge doesn't need to be anywhere near this drastic.
In fact it shouldn't even be large enough to see. You may wish to use numeric
input to achieve the effect. Make sure your CD has no non-planar polygons.
You could start from scratch creating a rectangular polygon, strectching one
side and lathing it to create your CD.
Once you have altered your CD you may wish to create a sequence of images
with subtle differences to use as a reflection image sequence.
I hope this is clear and useful to you. If not drop me a line and I attempt
to clarify.
